More About Our P&C

Newtown State School has a strong culture of parent involvement in the school. Each year parents get involved in school activities, such as:

  • helping in the Uniform Shop
  • helping at the Tuckshop
  • reading to students in the classroom
  • assisting with art classes
  • helping with learning activities
  • fundraising for school improvements
  • providing goods for raffles and events
  • running food stalls

All these activities are a great way to meet people. There is also considerable scope for parents to use their work related and professional skills, such as:

  • business and management skills to help run a subcommittee
  • architectural /planning skills to assist with capital and grounds development
  • writing skills to access external funds

The philosophy of our P&C is that all parents have something to offer, and something to gain, from being involved with the life of the school.  In the great democratic tradition of public education, we strongly believe that all parents are equally valuable, and that every contribution, whether it’s helping at Tuckshop or lobbying politicians, is equally important.

The main roles of our P&C are:

  • to foster community interest in educational matters at Newtown State School
  • to try to bring about closer co-operation between the parents of children attending Newtown State School and other members of the community, staff members of the School and students of the School
  • to give advice and recommendations to the Principal about issues, general operation and management of Newtown State School
  • to assist with financial or other resources or services for the benefit of students at Newtown State School

Our P&C achieves this by being the voice of the parents on policy issues and by working closely with the Principal regarding school operational matters.  Our P&C also organises events that foster community involvement and raise funds for the school.

Services that are managed by our P&C include Tuckshop, Uniform Shop and Outside School Hours Care (OSHC). These services are run by paid employees and volunteers.
