Grounds and classrooms

The school is well resourced and features ample classroom spaces, a swimming pool, multi-purpose tennis courts, practice cricket nets, a multi purpose hall for wet weather activities and two playing fields.

All students learn in interactive classrooms surrounded by gardens and large play areas.

Prep students have play equipment and an area to run and play. Years 1 – 2 have a large area to use with swings and climbing frames and an area to play soccer and low organisation games. Students in years 3 – 6 have access to a large climbing frame and an oval area on which to play sports. A well equipped Resource Centre houses our library, a computer lab and a multi-media room. Numerous handball courts situated on the ‘green’ at the front of the school see some serious competition from students of all ages.

Technology

Computers first appeared at Newtown State School in the eighties when Commodore VIC 20's were bought. These computers were used to familiarise the children with computers and to introduce them to keyboarding. Curriculum computers were purchased at the end of 1989. Since then there have been many changes. Today we have 80 plus computers set up in the school environment. The computer lab in the library is accessible for whole class use. A smaller lab and mobile class set of laptops is available for students in upper year classrooms and the school is continually adding to its bank of ipads to support student learning.

Every classroom teacher has a laptop and data projector to enhance student engagement and every classroom has wireless internet access, so students can log on anywhere in the school to browse the internet. Internet access is an everyday occurrence to enable differentiated curriculum delivery in response to the needs of students. Students access various programs on the internet to enhance their education via their own user name and password. The Managed Internet Service allows us to monitor every site a student visits.

Use of school facilities

The use of school facilities outside of hours is not permitted unless permission has been obtained through the principal. Some facilities are available for hire. Hire arrangements can be made through the school office.

Project Development

The development of projects for the maintenance and upgrade of buildings, equipment, resource security and grounds result from short and long term strategic and budgeting plans developed in consultation with and support from both the Department of Education and the Parents and Citizens Association.
