At Newtown State School, we recognise the importance of physical activity as part of a student’s physical and mental health and all students are encouraged to participate in all forms of physical activity. Hence, a wide range of sporting opportunities are offered on a weekly basis and throughout the year.

The Physical Education program is taught by our resident physical education specialist and sees each class involved in at least one, 30 minute lesson each week. During the warmer months (term 1 and 3) students participate in two swimming lesson per week. A learn-to-swim program is also offered on Friday afternoons for non-swimmers.

Year 6 students are offered the opportunity to engage in interschool sport on Friday afternoons throughout terms 3 and 4. These sports include softball, T-ball, cricket, AFL, rugby league, touch football, netball, basketball, hockey, volleyball and soccer.

Year 4 and 5 students are involved in modified games which lead into those sports played by the year 6 on Friday afternoons.

All students participate in the annual interhouse sports carnivals across the year that include track and field events, swimming and cross country. Qualifying students have the opportunity to represent the school at regional and state sporting carnivals in a range of sports, e.g. netball and rugby league.
