Year Prep/1R
Michelle Rankine
My name is Michelle Rankine and I teach a multi-age class consisting of Prep children and Grade Ones at Newtown State School. I have been teaching at this school for nine years and have found this experience to be both rewarding and enjoyable. Before teaching in Toowoomba I taught at Scarborough and in Atherton, North Queensland. My teaching career has always been in the early childhood area having taught Preschool for many years before it changed to Prep. I have two boys, aged 10 and 12 who play football and have many similar interests. As a family we also enjoy water skiing and camping together.
A challenging, active environment where children can:
·Feel safe and secure
·Explore and investigate ideas through hands on experiences
·Extend their academic and social skills
·Increase their level of self confidence and self esteem.
·Make friends and enjoy learning
·Learn to take risks and solve problems
·Participate in a variety of activities and experiences, individually, in small groups and the whole groups
Here are some of the things we expect to cover in Prep.
Prep is designed to build the foundation skills that children will need to succeed through their school experience. The students will be encouraged to actively make choices in relation to their learning and behaviour. They will participate in many experiences involving investigating and problem solving. There will be many opportunities to strengthen their early literacy and maths skills and knowledge. The children are expected to join in group discussions to impart information as well as listen to others. Development will occur across all areas including language, number, arts and physical skills. The Preps are involved in many aspects of the school routines including Music, PE and library lessons each week.
Here are some of the things we expect to cover in Grade 1.
The students will have many opportunities to develop their understanding of and skills in writing, reading, listening and speaking through a variety of experiences. Maths is also a major component of every day with hands on activities and also recording number concepts. They will take part in whole group activities, small group, pairs and individual work on many topics throughout the year. An important focus in grade one is to increase the children's confidence in reading and writing - to encourage them to have a go - and this in turn extends their skills in these areas. They will also be involved in activities relating to SOSE, Science and the Arts. Each week they will partake in a library, music and a PE lesson.
